ST. JOHN CHRYSOSTOM, RITE OF

Sometimes loosely identified with the Byzantine Rite. Actually St. John's role in reforming the earlier Rite of St. Basil was only a later development. Specifically, Chrysostom is said to have "left out a great deal and shortened all the forms" of the liturgy of St. Basil. His motive was "so that no one would stay away from this apostolic and divine institution" (De Traditone Divinae Missae, PG 65:8 51).
