A diocese or archdiocese over which a bishop actually presides. Technically every place in the world is under the jurisdiction of some bishop and belongs to some residential see. But sees are called residential mainly to distinguish them from titular sees, which formerly were the seats of ecclesiastical government but have since become extinct.
