REQUIESCAT IN PACE

May he or rest in peace. Invocation of God's mercy on the soul of a deceased person. Found in some of the earliest catacomb inscriptions on the graves. A familiar prayer in the Church's liturgy to which the response is "Amen." It is customarily abbreviated R.I.P.
