PARTHENOS
Biblical term for "virgin," used in the pre-Christian Greek translation of the Old Testament, referring to the virginal conception of the Messiah (Isaiah 7:14). Also the term used by the Evangelists in speaking of the Blessed Virgin (Matthew 1:18-25; Luke 1:26-27). (Etym. Greek parthenos, virgin.)
