LONGINUS

The soldier who, according to tradition, pierced the side of Christ with a spear (John 19:34). After his conversion it is said that he returned to Cappadocia, where he was put to death by order of Pontius Pilate. His relics were preserved in the Church of St. Augustine, Rome. The Roman Martyrology mentions him on March 15.
