LEVITES
Descendants of Levi, the third son of Jacob by Leah. The whole tribe of Levi was set apart by God for the service of the sanctuary. In place of land, there were to receive tithes and other landed property from the other tribes. Aaron and his sons were chosen for the priesthood (Exodus 8), while the subordinate offices of the temple and other public services were assigned to the rest of the tribe.
