GABBATHA
The Aramaic name of the place near Jerusalem where Pontius Pilate had his judgment seat. St. John identifies this as the site where Jesus was brought before Pilate to be condemned to death (John 9:13). (Etym. Aramaic gabbeta, height, knob; the name of the place called in Greek lithostr_tos, a flagstone pavement.)
