DOSITHEUS, CONFESSION OF

Definition

Standard profession of Eastern Orthodox faith, drafted in 1672 to meet the challenge of Protestantism. It reads like the declarations of the Council of Trent, in defending the priesthood, Mass and seven sacraments, the episcopal hierarchy, confession of sins, Mary's divine maternity and perpetual virginity, and the necessity of man's free co-operation with divine grace to merit eternal glory.
