DISPUTATION
Formal scholastic debate, originating in the medieval universities of Europe. The subject of the disputation is previously determined and the debate is conducted according to a traditional or accepted procedure. Associated for years with schools of theology, it is generally given as part of a public ceremony and often held on the occasion of some major ecclesiastical celebration.
