DELUGE
The biblical account of God's punishment of humankind by incessant rain that finally destroyed all except those persons who were with Noah in the ark (Genesis 6-9). The Deluge need not, however, have physically covered the whole earth. (Etym. Latin diluvium, flood, a washing away.)
