DEFENDANT
In ecclesiastical law a person whose case is being tried in a Church court. Defendants must attend in person or by procurator when summoned. In criminal cases they must have an advocate. Defendants have the right to appeal, from a lower to a higher ecclesiastical court, against an adverse sentence.
