CUSTOS
A superior officer among the Franciscan Order with varying duties. There are custos provinciae, who represents his provincial in general chapter, and custos regiminis, who rules a small province. Formerly the canon of a cathedral church who had the care of souls; also the treasure of a collegiate church. (Etym. Latin custos, preserver, keeper, protector.)
