CUBICULA

Burial chambers in the Roman catacombs. Usually hewn out of rock along the passages, they were open on two sides. Horizontal tiers of such niches rose to the ceiling. Thousands of them have been excavated. (Etym. Latin cubiculum, apartment for residing or sleeping, a resting place.)
