CHRISTIAN BROTHERS
Several communities of nonclerical men religious engaged in various apostolic works. The best know are the Congregation of Christian Brothers, formerly Christian Brothers of Ireland, by Edmund Ignatius Rice; the Brothers of Christian Instruction, founded in 1817 at Ploërmel, France, by the Abbés Lamennais and Deshayes; and the Brothers of the Christian Lamennais Schools, founded 1680 at Rheims, France, by St. John Baptist de la Salle.
