CARDINALS, RETIRED

According to the motu proprio Ingravescentem Aetatem, of November 21, 1970, Pope Paul VI decreed that cardinals are to retire from active duty when they have completed their eightieth year. At that age they cease to be members of the congregations of the Roman Curia, of all permanent organs of the Holy See and of Vatican City State; and they lose their right to elect the Roman Pontiff and in fact of participating in the conclave for the election of the Pope.
