BEL

The tutelary god of Babylon, occasionally called Merodach. The Hebrews gloried in a victory over the Babylonians by proclaiming: "Babylon is captured, Bel disgraced, Merodach shattered (Her idols are disgraced, her obscenities shattered)" (Jeremiah 50:2).
