ARCOSOLIUM
An arched recess used as a burial place in the catacombs. Sometimes the marble slab placed horizontally over the opening was decorated with symbolic frescoes and used as an altar for the celebration of the Mass. (Etym. Latin arcus, bow, arch + solium, a throne, royal seat; a seat.)
