ARCHIMANDRITE

Superior of a monastery in on of the Eastern Churches, notably the Melchites and Catholic Greeks. It is also a title of honor attached to the chancery of the leading Oriental patriarchates. (Etym. Greek arkhos, chief, ruler + mandra, monastery.)
