OTG: A Remarkable Catholic Lecture Series on the Arts in NYC
Let’s see if I’ve got this right. The Catholic Artists Society is an association of artists and media professionals, centered in New York City, working for the greater glory of God and the common good. The Catholic Center is a ministry of the Dominican Order at New York University. The Thomistic Institute is an academic institute devoted to Thomism as part of the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. (The PFIC is located within, and commonly referred to as, the Dominican House of Studies.) And the “Thomistic Institute in NYC” is an extension of the work of the Thomistic Institute at the Catholic Center.
Perhaps that’s not so easy to grasp in one sitting, but what is easy to grasp is that the Catholic Artists Society and the Thomistic Institute are co-sponsoring what promises to be a brilliant lecture series on the arts at the Catholic Center. This puts the location at 238 Thompson Street, New York, NY 10012.
Entitled The Art of the Beautiful, the series will consist of six monthly lectures running from September through February. All are on Saturday evenings starting at 7:30 pm. Each is followed by a reception and the chanting of Compline (night prayer). The first lecture is this Saturday, September 14th.
Those blessed to attend will hear some of America’s finest exponents of Catholic thinking about beauty, namely: Gregory Wolfe (editor of Image Journal); Peter John Cameron, OP (editor of Magnificat); David Clayton (Thomas More College); Alice Ramos (St. John’s University); Anthony Esolen (Providence College); and Joseph Koterski, SJ (Fordham University).
As one who will be unable to attend, I pray that someone will make a set of CDs or DVDs available.
