No time for the Pope

By Phil Lawler ( bio - articles - email ) | Jan 30, 2013

If you are less than 38 years old, only one US president in your lifetime has allowed a full 4-year term to lapse without having his Secretary of State visit the Pope.

Or put it this way: Since 1974 only one Secretary of State (acting/deputy secretaries don’t count) has not made time to meet with the Roman Pontiff.

Betcha can’t guess.

If this current article is any indication of the catholicity of Commonweal then perhaps this is a good time for subscribers of Commonweal to cancel their subscription. What a pity that the world is held in such high regard but long held teachings are not.

It's a blessing. Just imagine if there were photos of Pius XII having tea with, say, Hermann Göring, Joe Goebbels, or Lavrentiy Beria. Who would want that photo hanging around? I can imagine what the NYT would do with it. Why would any Catholic want to see Pope Benedict's memory embarrassed some day in the future by a photo with Hilary What's-her-name?

I'll bet the pope is thankful, too.
