Core Strength

By Chris Pelicano (bio - articles - send a comment) | February 25, 2012 10:52 AM

I know a guy who has been active all his life. By conventional standards of diet and exercise he is healthy. But his occupation requires him to sit for exended periods of time in front of his computer and this was crippling him —despite everything he was otherwise doing to stay healthy.

He looked for solutions, but found only band aides —short term 'fixes" for symptoms. Then he spoke to a friend who gave him two pieces of advice: get off your butt more often and build your core strength. His friend knew, by experience, that core strength supports peripheral strength —not the other way around.

It was excellent advice that has a myriad of applications socially, politically, economically, morally, intellectually —and yes, physically. By concentrating on building his core strength, the man reversed his crippling condition. It took time and hard work. And perhaps most importantly, as he grew stronger he realized just how weak he had previously been.

Unknowingly he had been seeking health through a peripheral wisdom, of sorts, which, of course, is not wisdom at all because, in reality it led to progressive weakness. It took a friend who was an essentialist to steer him away from his gluteal amnesia, get him off his butt, and invest in real strength. He is now stronger, wiser, and grateful to his friend.

I suppose there is a lesson in here somewhere. And, oh yeah, we've been sitting long enough —get up and do something to build core strength!
