Fr. Richard McBrien was asked on a network television special recently: "Will mandatory celibacy survive another church council?" He replied without hesitation: "No." Then smiled: "Its toast."
As a theologian at Fordham University remarked, "McBrien has never really been into obligatory celibacy, or voluntary celibacy, or celibacy, or whatever."
