Democracy at work?

By Phil Lawler (bio - articles ) | July 09, 2003 9:09 AM

The news story says that the Palestinian prime minister is threatening to resign.

You read it, and reflect: Toward whom is that threat directed?

If it's aimed at his fellow Palestinians, it's not likely to work. They think Abbas has been too easy on Israel.

If it's aimed at Israel, it's not likely to work. They think Abbas has been too soft on terrorists.

Sure enough, neither of those groups responded promptly to the threatened resignation. But one voice was heard. A US State department spokesman announced: "We stand by Prime Minister Abbas."
