No endorsement-- thank goodness!

By Diogenes (articles ) | Jul 02, 2003

Take a careful look at the public statement released by Cardinal Law after the announcement that Bishop O'Malley would become is successor in Boston.

Notice anything missing? The cardinal never indicates that he endorses the archbishop-elect.

And that's probably just as well. Cardinal Law is the only American prelate on the Vatican Congregation for Bishops; it's not unreasonable to assume that he had some say in the O'Malley selection. But right now, in Boston, an endorsement by Cardinal Law would be about as helpful as an endorsement by the New York Yankees.

Even the most die-hard supporter of Cardinal Law would admit that Bostonians would rather see the Yankees come than Cardinal Law. And I suspect BoSox fans have grudging respect for the Yankees--after all the Yankees know what they're about, go all out to get it, are successful far more often than not, and when they fail they don't try to blame the guy who sells the peanuts--none of which could be said of the departed Cardinal Law. Anyway, I'm watching my Cards beat the Giants. Good night!

I think what Diogenes meant is that an endorsement by Law would go over in Boston as well as an endorsement by the Yankees. Even the most die-hard Yankees fan would have to admit that they are not welcome in Boston.

I'm no fan of the Yankees but to say they're as bad as Cardinal Law really shows a lack of sportsmanship and good taste.
