What we are on the inside

Last Thursday's Arizona Republic carried a column built around an interview with Doug Woodin, whose daughter had been killed two years ago in a hit-and-run by a lawyer named Mark Torre.
I asked Woodin if he was surprised that a bishop was implicated in a hit-and-run. "I've never believed that your job has anything to do with it," he said. "It wasn't about what kind of lawyer Mark Torre was but what kind of man he was. Bishop. Doctor. Journalist. Whatever. There are times when we're tested and we find out what we are on the inside."
O'Brien. Weakland. O'Connell. Ziemann. Welsh. Ryan. Sanchez. It's not so much their sins, as the cowardice in fleeing from responsibility for their sins. We all acknowledge their long hours of committee work, fund-raising, organization, etc. But can any of their brothers speak to what kind of men they were?

And in true Polly Anna fashion, the simple-minded and the naive continue to deceive themselves, finding a myriad of excuses for the false shepherds. So it will continue to be: lie, lie, and lie some more. Then time off to rape a few youths, and then back to lie, lie, and lie some more. What will it take? Satan is the "father of lies." Can there be any doubt as to who sired the false shepherds? Are we pushed to the point of inviting Osama to come and blow to bits the next bishops' meeting ?
