A letter from Archbishop Michael Sheehan to the Catholics of Phoenix tells us all we need to know about the prospects for reform:

On behalf of the Church, I thank Bishop Thomas J. O'Brien for his service. He has been a dear friend and a brother bishop. Under his leadership, the diocese has grown.

Under. His. Leadership.

Under his leadership, the diocese has grown. Sounds like a tumor or a cyst the way he describes it. Since when does a priest or bishop mark his success by the size of his diocese? I've got an idea -- how about measuring their success by how many souls you have saved? Or will Bishops not be judged this way? Fulton Sheen pray for us!

Archbishop Michael Sheehan has done a great in Santa Fe and will so again in Phoenix, if we give him the chance. Bishop O'Brien did many good things over the years; we need to remember those accomplishments in spite of recent problems. God bless Mike & Tom!

Archbishop Sheehan: Don't. Be. Silly. [with apologies for invoking the title of a letter/op-ed from the blasphemous C Hitchens]
