 Off the Record

the other appointment

The speculation about the next archbishop of Boston has overshadowed discussion of Cardinal Bevilacqua's (seemingly) impending retirement. He turns eighty one week from today. Perhaps the appointments of the next archbishop of Philadelphia and the next archbishop of Boston will be made on the same day, which needn't be next Tuesday, if recent precedent be any guide. Cardinal Hickey of Washington turned eighty on October 11, 2000, and his successor was appointed on November 21.
