With Pope Benedict back in Rome, the Catholics of Great Britain are now left to rely on their own bishops for a powerful and unflinching presentation of the faith. Good luck with that.

To the list of British bishops who waffled and backpedaled in broadcast interviews during the papal visit, add the name of Bishop Kieran Conry of Arundel and Brighton. Asked whether the Catholic Church might eventually ordain woman as priests-- a simple question, which allows for a simple answer-- Bishop Conry coughed up a furball:

Well, according to Pope John Paul II, this was a definitive statement, wasn't it, so... [laughs] I couldn't possibly comment.

Actually you could comment, Your Grace. You could offer your support, your assent, to the teaching of the universal Church. Maybe even take a shot at explaining it. Assuming, that is, that you do assent, and you can explain it?
