don't be embarrassed

By Diogenes (articles ) | June 25, 2010 5:53 PM

What is the source of the current distress about sexual abuse in the Catholic Church?

An insufficiently positive public-relations campaign.

That’s the message from Bishop Donal McKeown, an auxiliary of Ireland’s Down and Connor diocese. Following the lead of Archbishop Wilton Gregory, who told American reporters that the crisis in this country is “history,” Bishop McKeown too said that the complaints are “historical.” But he didn’t stop there.  “As a Church we have failed to get the message out that Church child-protection procedures are among the best that there are,” Bishop McKeown said.

Are you ready for the bishop’s bottom-line message about the Church and sexual abuse? Better sit down, and hold onto the sides of the chair:

We have nothing to be embarrassed about in this context.

Nothing. To. Be. Embarrassed. About.

I give up.

Offhand, I can think of one thing we have to be embarrassed about, and his name is Donal McKeown.
