get away from it all

Why did Pope Benedict travel to Portugal this week? To pray at the shrine of Our Lady of Fatima? To rally the faithful there in the face of rising secularism? To discuss the 3rd secret? Not according to the AP headline writers:

So let's see how this works out. Pope Benedict knew, months ago, that there would be an international furor arising late in the spring of 2010, over sex-abuse charges in Ireland, Germany, Austria, and Italy. So he planned a trip to Portugal. Naturally.

At Fatima, celebrations were already planned for the 10th anniversary of the beatification of two Fatima seers. Possibly Pope Benedict arranged that in advance, too. Clever man.

There is another explanation-- for the headline, if not for the Pope's trip (which was explained in the first paragraph): AP doesn't have any hot news on the sex-abuse scandal, so it's time to reheat the leftovers.
