The redoubtable Father Z has a brilliant suggestion for dissident Catholics liberals:

Since you seem to want to be Anglicans, leave that closet and ask Archbishop Rowan Williams for your own Ordinariate.?

The symmetry of the proposal is striking. Pope Benedict has devised ordinariates for those people who want to maintain an Anglican identity while clinging firmly to the apostolic tradition. The Church of England could open similar opportunities for those who want to claim a Catholic identity while tossing the apostolic tradition out the window.

Let's get this deal done. Do we need to sweeten the terms? We could toss in the LA cathedral and the bas-relief of St. Remby in Milwaukee.

An appeal from our founder, Dr. Jeffrey Mirus:

Unc, Unc, Unc. That's not how the ABC rolls. Confronted with a problem, Benedict studies the question and proposes a solution. On the other hand, Rowan Williams proposes a task force to formulate a process to determine what a workable solution might involve, sends the task force report out for provincial input, reworks the report to remove anything useful from it and only THEN begins the process of actually answering the question. With any kind of luck.

We could also throw in a player to be named later (after he retires from his Los Angeles diocese).

I haven't seen leadership like that shown by Rowan Williams since Yaphet Kotto swallowed the air pellet in Live and Let Die.

Even if they were to refuse the deal I suggest giving them the LA cathedral as a gesture of good-will.....although it could be construed by some as a gesture of ill-will......
