Off the Record

presenting the Good News III

By Diogenes (articles ) | June 04, 2003 10:04 AM

Suppose you were hosting the first North American Institute for Catholic Evangelization. Whom would you include on your list of major presenters?

(a) The president of a Catholic college whose graduates are beacons of fidellity to the teaching of the Church.

(b) The superior of a religious community that is attracting scads of young vocations.

(c) Robert McCarty, head of a youth ministry federation, who says, "I'm finding in young people a real desire to serve the Church. But the role of women is an issue. One of the plus characteristics of this generation is they are very tolerant. They have an appreciation for diversity-- sexual diversity, religious diversity, cultural and ethnic diversity. So young people are looking and thinking, 'Hmm, its not an inclusive Church.' Not just the girls are turned away, the guys are turned away, too. As much as the Church doesnt want to admit it, part of this is theology.... Married priesthood? I think that would change a lot of it."

If you're the USCCB Secretariat for Evangelization, the Archdiocese of Portland, and the University of Portland, your answer is (c).
