Will some kind citizen with a short-barrel .38 and a regard for liturgical decency please put a round through the kneecaps of those MCs who kit-out bishops in Andy Warhol/Jackson Pollack/Corita Kent ponchos? It would be a service to the Universal Church. Thank you.

I wonder if one could offer the Extraordinary Rite in these.

What would your reaction be if you saw these three individuals standing on your front lawn?

hey, "where's the money?" Give the Holy Father a break! Don't like the vestments, but don't think he ought "to take the shot" for this.

Come on! Please do not paint (lol) our Holy Father as a victim here..... he begins vesting - they bring out the paint ball chasuble and he says: No Thanks hand me the white on in the sacristy...if there isn't one some curate is sent to a local church pronto to get one.... Nope, sorry to say he has to take the heat.....

As a lowly country priest, I bring my own vestments to parishes for this reason. (Blue when worn on Marian feasts (Sept. 8) is appropriate when it is on a mainly white vestment.) The Holy Father must know that he can bring his own vestments in his travels. The local bishops who choose to wear whacked-out vestments are responsible, but the pope surely does not HAVE TO endure such shenanigans. I have burned/buried such vestments in each of my assignments, replacing them with traditional ones AMDG.

This outrageous creation is the visual expression of the discontinuity with the past that the Pope has rejected. It is tragic that the Austrian episcopate and its staff foisted this on the good Pope. Past criticisms of baroque music settings for the Mass complained of theatrics entering the sacred precints. This chasuable is a new twist on that: edgy fashion statements forced upon the Pope. A complete distraction and interference with the sacred. An unworthy intrusion of repulsive worldliness.

I believe this was from Mass on Sept. 8----Feast of the Birth of Mary. Unbelievable. I like the paint ball joke though.

just exactly what liturgical color are these vestments?

  • Posted by: - Sep. 09, 2007 11:34 PM ET USA

Tie dyed vestments. Who woulda thunk it? I feel bad for the Holy Father. The vestments were probably provided for everyone on the spot. How much you want to bet that from now on, somebody in the entourage is tasked with checking these details out before the fact?

More importantly, are these legitimate liturgical colors? What season?

  • Posted by: - Sep. 09, 2007 8:41 PM ET USA

    Paintball! THAT is too funny.

They look like they've just lost a round of paint-ball.
