don't ask me, pal, i just work here

By Diogenes (articles ) | Mar 07, 2007

Via Gerald Augustinus: Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony takes advantage of the Religious Ed Confab for an on-line chat with adults. The arch-evangelist in action:

Moderator: From Denny: Why can only men become priests, and not women?
Cardinal Mahony: The moderator has better answers than I do to that question!!!

Inspiring.

I'll say this for his Eminence: it's a more truthful answer than last year's winner.

Go here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exeJwY1FD4Q and watch a "youtube" of the closing Mass at the dissent-fest. It comes complete with "dancers". Do the majority of Catholics want that???

I wonder how the good Cardinal would handle a priest who was caught making a similar flippant remark about the usefulness of any archdiocesan fundraising scheme.

How many vocations does Cardinal bring in amongst the "millions of Catholics" he claims that he has to minister to? How many Holy Priests has LA ordained? I think that his Eminence caters to the fruits and nuts. But then, what can you expect from North Hollywood? A bunch of second rate actors.. The Cardinal's answer about the "Latin Rite" was absolutely absurd! I thought he had a "Reach out Program" Oh! that must be for the "gays" But he can't reach out for the Latin Mass faithful?

Yes, "Bill," what the Cardinal added is not wrong per se... and it's not eloquent and it is misleading and, most importantly, it does not actually answer the question with the actual Teaching of the Church. The Church does not have the AUTHORITY to ordain women; and this Teaching is based on Scripture and Tradition, with profound theological, ecclesiological and anthropological bases relating to Jesus Christ & His Bride, the Church, & the Apostles whom He chose.

Do you folks think that Di, and we who comment here, are the only orthodox Catholics in the world? I mean, here we’ve got a bishop who tells fantastic lies, pays no heed to Church law, disobeys the Holy Father, distorts Church doctrine, and lives a worldly life, yet the overwhelming majority of his sheep utter no protest. Well then, it looks as though this bishop is feeding his flock exactly what they want. And that, it seems to me, is indicative of the general state of the Church since VCII.

Please look at the transcript, the Cardinal did add this before answering the next question: CardinalMahony: Denny: we are following the tradition of the early Church and Jesus' actions. That has become our Tradition for a long time. Perhaps not the most eloquent explanation of the theology but not wrong either.

Amen, frjimc and convert1994. Gerald notes in his blog that Cdl. Mahony, responding to a question about cremation & spreading the ashes of a person's body, actually said that it's OK to do that, "over the sea, in the forest... but not over Disneyland." Mahony directly contradicts Church teaching about reverence for the body (cremated body is still a person's body) & proper burial or placement in a mausoleum (see can.1176; CCC 2301). May Pope Benedict XVI force Cdl. Mahony's retirement AMDG.

I wanted to point out just how solicitious His Eminence is for ALL the Catholics under his putative care. Even if one were not to dispute the obviously mendacious statement that only a "handful" care about the Latin Mass, does he really mean to tell us that he would not be willing to reach out to even a HANDFUL of faithful Catholics? Is he really THAT busy that nobody in his organization can attend to them? What a stinking liar he is -- and I use the words advisedly.

James:I've read that Pope Benedict is concerned about the liturgy and is about to issue a decree that encourages a more generous use of Latin in the liturgy including the use of the Tridentine rite. Do you support this and will you encourage the use of more traditional forms of worship in the archdiocese if he issues the decree? CardinalMahony: James: of our 5 million Catholics, only a handful are interested in the Latin Mass. I must focus upon the 99% who need a vibrant Mass that includes them.

There is one sure thing about the Cardinal; he never disappoints. He always has an evasive, loony, obfuscating answer that avoids Church Canons. Can we swap him to Australia for Cardinal Pell?

You have GOT to be kidding! I've been patient and kind but Cardinal Mahony, sir, if you're reading this, I beg you to resign and live out your remaining years in a monastery. "The Church has no authority to ordain women," should be your simple answer. Spend your time immersed in Sacred Scripture -- especially Proverbs for you, Eminence -- and look to Christ for your justification, not to the secular press.
