horsefeathers

By Diogenes (articles ) | Oct 12, 2006

Parental discretion advised: the shocking image on display here may be disturbing to some viewers. However, there are some issues of public morality too gruesome to be discussed in the abstract, and this is one of them. CWN regrets the circumstances that attend the necessity to link to the hosting site.

Well, it was a close call, but in the nick of time, JUSTICE PREVAILED. Social justice, that is. Cackling imperialists at William & Mary just got a prime weapon of psychological oppression knocked from their hands. Karen Hall points us to their rueful concession of defeat:

The College of William and Mary has notified the National Collegiate Athletic Association that during the next academic year the College will phase out the two feathers that are currently a part of its athletic logo.

The decision comes in response to a recent NCAA ruling regarding William and Mary's athletic logo. While the Association stipulated that the nickname "Tribe" was not problematic, the College was forced to change its logo or face sanctions that would restrict its opportunities in NCAA postseason play. ...

William and Mary's decision to change its athletic logo is related to a review that began in 2004 by the NCAA of more than 30 universities' use of mascots, nicknames, logos and imagery associated with Native Americans to determine whether they were "hostile and abusive." In May 2006, the NCAA ruled that William and Mary's "Tribe" nickname was neither hostile nor abusive but determined that the athletic logo -- which contains two green and gold feathers -- could create an environment that is offensive.

The use of green and gold feathers is offensive to whom, exactly? Parrots? Perhaps the keen thinkers that make up the NCAA's Thought Police have a personal investment in the decision that they'd prefer not to advertise.

We have a city named after Chief Oshkosh, and the older HS were the 'chiefs'...until the PC crowd forced them to change that mascot. So now I believe they are the Wildcats. I have been waiting for the city itself to be forced to change ITS name, as would be Tomahawk, etc

Doorman: I had not though of that but you are right! African-Americans have begun suing colleges for not having separate-but-equal dorms so they can maintain their "culture."

If you're going to quote someone from Orlando, why not quote something from the Orlando Truth newsletter. Now there's a good publication! Been going for 6 years and they're on their 50th issue. They just did a fantastic article on the dismal failure of Bishop Wenski's Synod. Bsp. Wenski 's theme was Starting Afresh with Christ but is really Starting Afresh with Sr. Linda Gaupin's Failed Old Programs. The Synod was managed by a Protestant and many people on committees were CTA & VOTF.

Fifty years from now, liberal's will be complaining that colleges are white-male only insititutions founded on bigotry because the only logo's and team names that are used are representative of European and Christian History. There will be lawsuit's for diversity and schools will start calling their college teams things like "The Mayans", "The Inca", "Apache", "Navajo" and the logo's will be pictures of indian heads with feathers, tomohawks etc.. And the Lawyers will make money. A Pattern?

It just looks like two quills in an inkwell to me.

The colleges and universities are supposed to have some really good thinkers on campus. Why are they tolerating such abusive behavior bythe NCAA. Why can't theschools simply withdraw and form a new association? TWho appointed the NCAA as censor for mascots?

Esalkin, don't forget that San Diego named a team after the most politically incorrect of all, the Padres. Has your pastor ever homilized against them? Neither has mine.

Perhaps they could replace their current evil emblem with one more reflective of reality. I propose that they change their logo to a one-armed bandit or roulette wheel.

The fascism of trying to please everyone all the time and offend no one ever will eventually and invariably lead to passing speech-limiting laws, "for the preservation of freedom and respect". It will elevate victim hood and paranoia into a virtue. Ultimately, even priests and pastors will be subject to arrest for just reading parts of Scripture (this HAS happened in Canada). Political Correctness is inherently, inseparably and explicitly anti-Christian.

What about the "Fighting Irish", "Trojans", "Aztecs", "Knights", "Cowboys", "Crusaders", "Dutchmen", "Explorers", "Highlanders", "Lancers", "Minutemen", "Minutewomen (not in my history books), "Monarchs", "Musketeers", "Norse", "Patriots", "Pilgrims", "Pioneers", "Pirates"... Well, you get the idea. BTW, The "Seminoles" of FSU will keep their name after reaching an agreement with the Florida tribe. (They paid them off)

The politically correct yellow brick road that leads to a reddish gulag at the end of the journey. It all starts with cowardice and capitulation for the sake of comity and compromise--not unlike progressive Catholics..
