another hope dead in the cradle

By Diogenes (bio - articles ) | Sep 04, 2006

Already playing for the wrong team on the gay marriage issue, Senate candidate Bob Casey has now thrown over Catholic teaching on life (and dishonored his father's memory) by taking a dive for Plan B. Rod Dreher reports on Casey's Meet the Press capitulation:

Then the Plan B issue came up. Santorum said flat-out that the pill is sometimes abortifacient, which is certainly true if you believe that life begins at conception; the pill can work by preventing the fertilized egg (that is, a human being) from implanting on the uterine wall. Santorum said he was against Plan B for that reason. Casey, who insists he's pro-life, said he was in favor of Plan B because "the science is clear" that it's contraception. That's a shameful dodge. The science is clear about how Plan B works; whether or not that counts as abortion is a moral question -- and a question that the Catholic Church answers very clearly.

Perhaps his bishop might remind Casey that, even when the effect of Plan B is contraceptive rather than abortifacient, its use is mortally sinful.

So yet another of our next-generation "Catholic" Democrats puts his faith into action in the Georgetown-approved mode. We can be reasonably sure that, if elected, he'll implement the policy of the USCCB on wetlands reclamation.

Diamantina: Magisterium IS guide. DFL can clash with it re doubts re Plan B’s sometimes-abortifacient effects. So, CLOSE ID w DFL, given Anti-Life National Dems, is dangerous. Consider ”consistent life ethic PLEDGE of non-violence” by Carol Crossed on DFL site: “We believe that this protection of the vulnerable against violence can ONLY come about through non-violence” It undercuts Just War needs in real world. She is ALSO in the better FFL which can still conflict in some areas, e.g., marriage

You would make a GREAT Republican, Diamantina! Come on in, the water's fine..............

Esalkin & I.M. Teachable: What about Democrats for Life or Feminists for Life? Do you think those organizations are OK? I hope Catholics needn't renounce feminism (which isn't just about abortion rights), social democracy, the belief in the (potential) efficacy of the welfare state, pacifism, opposition to the death penalty etc. to be truly pro-life. As a Catholic who opposes abortion and favors feminism, I hope that "Catholic Democrat" isn't an oxymoron. I'd make a terrible Republican!

Bless you esalkin for “Oxymoron:Catholic Democrat” Extend your thought to include “pro-choicers” in other parties, other faiths to form unbreakable Test Proposition: “A God-respecting pro-choicer is an oxymoron”. Try to BUST it. Once you see it CAN’T be broken by sincere believers, let’s EMPLOY it as a TOOL to expose the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice. RCRC is the Dems’ “magisterium” that God-talking Dems lean on. If we focus on RCRC’s DISRESPECT for God, the Dems’ religiously FOLD!

    Oxymoron: Catholic Democrat

Another masterful job of putting self and politics above truth and religion. Perhaps the USCCB will announce--well after the elections, of course--that it is a mortal sin to vote for a Democrat. NO!! That is just too much to hope for.

A serious slip by Santorum. From transcript: he picks up Casey’s use of “common ground” as justification for Santorum’s voting re rape, incest, life of mother & THAT is enough to alienate him from many Catholics inside & outside A.L.L. But on positive side he mentions “limiting the other abortions” which MIGHT be in line with resolution of a recent MAJOR problem w parts of Sect. 73 of John Paul II’s “EV” - resolved by the “Doctrinal Note”. He may lose narrowly by such A.L.L. votes. So, tell him

I guess Bob's trying to be sure *he'll* be allowed to speak at the national convention. Nice job, son.
