oops! wrong Klan

By Phil Lawler ( bio - articles - email ) | Nov 11, 2005

Phil Johnston, the chairman of the Democratic Party in Massachusetts, is outraged.

It's not easy for a Democrat to be outraged in Massachusetts, where that party has a stranglehold on the body politic. Sure enough, the source of Johnston's outrage is from out-of-state.

In Washington last night, when Bay State Governor Mitt Romney spoke to the Federalist Society, the chairman's introductory remarks included a gag that Massachusetts today is run by the "modern day KKK"-- "the Kennedy, Kerry Klan." Romney reportedly chuckled along with the conservative audience.

"It is embarrassing that Gov. Mitt Romney would laugh at any joke that disparages Catholics, African Americans, and Jews," Johnston fumed.

Um... Phil? The joke didn't disparage Catholics, African Americans, or Jews. The old KKK did that. But this joke disparaged Massachusetts.
