sources of inspiration

James Kushiner posts this interesting item about the National Council of Churches on the Touchstone blog. He's quoting a Weekly Standard article by Mark Tooley:

Although the NCC's income had fallen from over $10 million to $6 million, [General Secretary Bob] Edgar erased the deficit-spending that was choking the NCC.

Aware that the denominations would provide no more financial rescues, Edgar changed the NCC's system of financial support. Instead of depending on the churches, the NCC is increasingly funded by left-wing philanthropies, like the Tides Foundation and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and political advocacy groups, like the Sierra Club and MoveOn.org.

For years, the National Council of Churches has served as a kind of political counterweight to the Catholic Church and the Southern Baptists. These aren't folks occupied with putting bibles in motel rooms. When you look at who's paying the rent, you get a pretty good picture of the business the NCC does best.

Once again, thank you CWN. This is precisely the kind of news story that explains important areas of the scene but which, strangely, catches the MSM studying their fingernales oh so carefully.

If anything I have read today is not news, this is. The NCC's role as political counterweight has been obvious for years. The thing that always amuses me is that they are customarily described as representing the "mainstream" Protestant churches. Ignoring the fact that through the defections of the people in the pews their mainstream has become a trickle.
