welcome to my show

Tom Hennessy sings the praises of Jimmy Breslin's favorite priest:

[Brooklyn's Fr. John Powis] kept his Sunday tradition of having the congregation sing "Happy Birthday" to members celebrating that occasion.

Once when a little girl missed the cue to stand for the song, Powis caught her disappointment, summoned her to the front of the church, and had the congregation sing a second time just for her. Who would not love such a man?

Hennessy is a local columnist here in Long Beach..... let me tell you he hated the church for years before we ever heard of an abuser. But he never met a communist he didnt love. And he cussed me out when I said he was a liberal. Go figure.

Hey, give poor him a break. It was his seminary formation...he's not to blame. Just don't tell me he leads in singing "Happy Birthday" on Christmas & Sept 8th!

So many showboat priests are popular, and so many good priests are unappreciated. My heart goes out to the good pastors who face hostile families when they try to explain that "Danny Boy" and "We've Only Just Begun" aren't appropriate recessionals for funeral and wedding liturgies.

And who else would not love such a man? "special ops sacerdos" and many (not all) other priests I know.
