physician, heal thyself

By Diogenes ( articles ) | May 03, 2003

Lesley Payne's 1997 article quotes a therapist at the St. Luke Institute:

The bishops were in constant contact with St. Luke's, and were running the show. [Father Canice Connors, O.F.M.Cap.] did what the bishops wanted him to do. Many knew about [Father Curtis Bryant, S.J.]. Sometimes a visiting bishop would meet Curtis, seeing him prance around like a peacock, and say, 'Who the hell was that?' We'd say, 'Oh, he's our director.'"

Larry Stammer's 2002 article quotes Fr. Bryant himself:

Many gay priests are convinced that their struggles with homosexuality could be inspiring stories of redemption -- if only they had the confidence to tell them. "They're submarining ... and they've got their periscopes up," said Father Curtis Bryant, a Jesuit priest and psychotherapist in Los Angeles. "They have so re-closeted themselves that you will not find a Roman collar in West Hollywood. Everybody is running for cover."
