Christians as terrorists

By Phil Lawler (bio - articles ) | April 28, 2005 11:39 AM

Over at National Review Online, Stanley Kurtz offers his typical insightful perspective on the secular liberals who think that Christians are a menace because they're so... so... what's the word I'm looking for?

Oh, yeah: intolerant. Christians are intolerant. And the proof is: the Left can't tolerate them.

Kurtz comments:

According to Harper’s, conservative Christians are making “war on America.” Can you imagine the reaction to a cover story about a “war on America” by blacks, gays, Hispanics, or Jews?

But wait: If Christians are making war on America, then American should be able to fight back, right? Kurtz gets that point, too:

For a very long time now, secular liberals have treated conservative Christians as the modern embodiment of evil, the one group you’re allowed to openly hate.

Yes, a very insightful piece. And moderate, too. Missing, though, is any mention of what kicked off this latest onslaught. Just a few months ago Bill Clinton gave a speech in which he identified religious conservatives (meaning Christians) as being the enemies of civilization. News of it was carried on CWN.

Aside from Kurtz's lack of originality ("can you imagine if a liberal did this?"), and his related resort to the cliche ("the modern embodiment of evil"), he's got a point, although a small one. GWB's re-election was never in doubt, and homosexual marriage was denounced at the polls something like seven times, even in supposedly "liberal" Oregon. If Christians are making war on America, it's a case of self-flagellation. No, as Uncle D has repeatedly and wittily exposed, it's the MSM.
