Whose church did he destroy?

By Diogenes (articles ) | April 05, 2005 12:39 PM

It wasn't easy to match the bad-taste standard set by the New York Times in reporting the Pope's death. But the Times editors have managed to outdo themselves, finding Thomas Cahill to trash the late Pope's memory, proclaiming that John Paul II has destroyed the Catholic Church.

Here's just one sample, lightly annotated:

In order to have been named a bishop, a priest must have been seen to be absolutely opposed to masturbation, premarital sex, birth control (including condoms used to prevent the spread of AIDS), abortion, divorce, homosexual relations, married priests, female priests and any hint of Marxism.
In short, to be named a bishop you had to be a Catholic.
It is nearly impossible to find men who subscribe wholeheartedly to this entire catalogue of certitudes...
Or at least they can't be found on the cocktail-party circuits frequented by Thomas Cahill.
...as a result the ranks of the episcopate are filled with mindless sycophants and intellectual incompetents.
Otherwise known as people who disagree with that mental giant, Thomas Cahill.

Gee whiz, Mr. Cahill. Are you also aware that as a single Catholic male, I must live by morals that also oppose masturbation, premarital sex, birth control (at least in principle when celibate), abortion, divorce, homosexual relations, married priests, female priests and Marxism (Don't tell me Mr. Cahill is also a liberation theologian?) What about dirty thoughts, Mr. Cahill? Heavy drinking? And I get to do it all without the extra graces given to priests through ordination.

Who in blazes is this Thomas Cahill? Is it a pen name for Robert Drinan or Andrew Greeley? Or is it an editor or the National Anti-Catholic Reporter? Whoever he is, and whatever he is, he is not a Roman Catholic! Jashu

Isn't it wonderful that the Roman Cathlolic Church has such high standards, for it's priests, bishops and beliveing lay persons,it's too bad these same standards weren't required for journalists.
