Today's Osservatore Romano carries a blistering "Notification" -- dated 13 December 2004 -- concerning the work of a New York Province Jesuit, Fr. Roger Haight, S.J. "Grave doctrinal errors against the divine and Catholic faith of the Church" are identified in Haight's book Jesus Symbol of God in the areas of theological methodology, the pre-existence of the Word, the divinity of Jesus, the Trinity, the salvific value of the death of Jesus, the unicity and universality of Jesus and the Church, and the Resurrection of Jesus. The Notification, signed by Cardinal Ratzinger and Archbishop Amato of the CDF, and carrying a declaration that it was approved by Pope John Paul II, concludes thus:

As a consequence (of the aforementioned errors), the author is forbidden the teaching of Catholic theology until such time as his positions are rectified so as to be in full conformity with the Church's doctrine.

Haight, formerly a professor at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, MA, is currently listed as a teacher of theology at Union Theological Seminary in New York.
