Helpful handcuffs

By Diogenes (articles ) | Feb 08, 2005

Bronson Havard, the spokesman for the Dallas diocese, has an amazing resilience to embarrassment. That's just as well; it seems to be a job requirement.

So we're not surprised when, in response to the news that the district attorney is conducting a criminal investigation of the diocese, Havard tells the Dallas Morning News: "We welcome the DA's help."

His help, mind you.

And what will the DA "help" diocesan officials to do? He might escort them to jail-- which could certainly be a "help" for the Catholics of Dallas, but not for their diehard-loyal employees.

Wait! I remember! He's going to "help" with record-keeping, which has proved to be such a nuisance in other American dioceses.

The only thing we can hope for, to make the irony complete, is for used car salesmen to call on newspaper reporters to call on politicians to keep the Church(men) honest. Now THAT's the definition of irony.

Unfortuately, some people are just too caught up in their own ignorance to be embarrassed. You may have hit on the definitve example.

Maybe he can help Cardinal Mahoney, too.

Actually record-retrieval seems to be where the help is needed. We now have the media calling for the govmint to keep the Church(men) honest. This is a prescription for going to hell in a handbasket.
