 Off the Record

The ultimate insult

By Phil Lawler (bio - articles ) | December 10, 2004 6:19 PM

In Cambridge, Massachusetts, radical activists defaced a Catholic chuch, spray-painting feminist slogans on the facade and twisting coathangers around a statue of the Virgin Mary.

The pastor was nonplussed. Why did they do it? he asked the Boston Globe, observing that his was a "progressive" parish.

Of course he understood why people would be angry with the Catholic Church (of course), but Father Charles Collins felt that this went too far. It was... Well, it was offensive!

How offensive was it? Let's let Father Collins answer that question:

It's as personally affrontive (sic) as a pro-lifer who goes inside an abortion clinic and passes out literature to staff.

Only in Cambridge (Archdiocese of Boston) would a priest reprimand the people who desecrate Catholic churches by telling them they're acting like (gasp!) pro-lifers.

Isn't it long overdue that we start all over again in Boston? Is there any orthodox Catholic entity/priest in the Boston Archd.? We can't go on like this. The place is insane!

One might gently point out the error of this grotesque comparison Fr. Collins made by emailing him at saintjohnchurch@aol.com.

    INCINERATE Collins and company ?

Fr. Collins has, obviously, never learned to think. He has probably never learned to express anything but himself.

Well, I myself think it's as affrontive as a Catholic who genuflects before receiving Communion! But ... is it as affrontive as someone who uses words like "affrontive"?

Oh, come, Phil. That's not true. It is FAR from "only" in the Archdiocese of Boston where this could happen. I can name LOTS of them---starting with my own, that of San Francisco.
