Signs of slippage

When a special counsel appointed by the White House denied that homosexuality is a protected category under current federal civil-rights laws, gay activists howled in protest.
Predictable, you say? Quite so. But it's not so predictable-- and much more troubling-- that the White House sided with the gay activists rather than the special counsel, according to a Boston Globe report:
Yesterday, White House spokesman Trent Duffy said the president "believes that no federal employee should be subject to unlawful discrimination, and federal agencies will fully enforce the law against discrimination, including discrimination based on sexual orientation."
But the point is that existing federal laws do not ban discrimination based on sexual orientation!
So the White House is in the odd position of pledging to enforce a law that doesn't exist, and giving gay activists by executive fiat something that they could not achieve by legislative approval.
There's no doubt that a Kerry White House would hand out dozens of policy victories to homosexual activists. You expect something different from Bush.
