solemn impiety

By Diogenes (articles ) | Jan 29, 2004

Daddy, do atheists go on retreat?

No dear, they call it an "advance," and you can get some idea of what to expect at the Freedom From Religion Foundation website, which links this disappointingly Camp Fire Girl-ish specimen of a godless Sunday:

If you are a freethinker and are ready to live the rational life, please come join us at beautiful Lake Hypatia. Our meetings are held the third Sunday of each month, starting with Social hour at 11 AM, Covered Dish Lunch at noon and Speaker at 1 PM. Afterwards, folks continue to socialize, take walks, fish or paddle boat around the 12 acre lake.

It wouldn't seem to be a parody, but it's hard to be sure. The Lake Hypatia style of freedom from religion seems so ... churchy, albeit in a sleepy, Methodist variety of churchiness. I wonder what they do to keep the children quiet during the post-prandial sermon.

An appeal from our founder, Dr. Jeffrey Mirus:

The ONLY rational life IS the Life in Christ. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. I wonder why they've chosen a Sunday to meet?

I guess not too many NASCAR dads and their families will show up for this blast. At least, at my parish festival, we still have the beer kegs flowing and the band playing while pull-tabs are popping.
