    Bishop Wilton Gregory was a priest at 25 and an aux bishop at 35 and was Cardinal Bernardin's secretary -- that he was his protege is a simple statement of fact and not disparagment.

Translated into the active form this becomes: "Fifteen of the perps were homosexual or bisexual and the remaining two may have been heterosexual." On a related point: Do they take the vow of chastity in Luxembourg?

    Like us mere mortals, Bishops start to show their true colors when placed on the witness stand, or being in other situations where they aren't receiving softball questions from the media. Bishop Gregory's speaking style, as well as his silence on the smearing of Frank Keating, may simply be the maneuvering of a wily ecclesial politician. In the fullness of time, all will be revealed.

    I read a strange comment, I don't recall where, which described Bsp Gregory in an obviously disparaging description as "one of Bernardin's proteges." The implication, of course, is that he is part of the lavender mafia that formed its first criminal cabals in the Sixties. This doesn't seem at all consistent with the Bsp's candid comments about the scandal and the premdomination of homosexuals in the priesthood. Am I wrong?
