Off the Record

newspaper editorial on Bishop Trautman

By Jeff (articles ) | December 07, 2003 7:15 AM

From today's Erie Times-News:

If you haven't noticed, the bishop is mad at us. Bishop Donald Trautman of the Catholic Diocese of Erie doesn't like it when the newspaper reports on stories that reflect badly on the Catholic Church or on him. He would prefer that we forget the sexual abuse charges against the priests. Forget the scandals. Perhaps, even forget the victims.

The problem is -- we can't. His reaction? I'm not talking to you anymore. And I won't let any priests write their religious columns for you to read in this paper, either. Basically, he's taking his ball, or in this case, his priests, and going home.

He calls it a "conspiracy." We call it doing our job....

If even half of the informaiion I've found on Erie is accurate, Bishop Trautman has a lot to worry about. He is reportedly one of those who had orthodox men screened out during the vocation process. He also had a psychologist that considers homosexuality normal and those who oppose it immature. The priesthood in Erie may have a high percentage of sexual deviants and some of them probably active. The bishop may have a big mess on his hands and silence is his protection.

The Bishop has many means and methods to get his message out in a positive way. A reaction like this only plays into the hands of the critics of the Church -- It looks to me that the Bishop doesn't want any reporting. About all I know about Erie is that Bishop Trautman has a feud going with Fr. John Trigilio who is a very good priest.

Actually, what the "Times-News" is trying to do is to fan the flames of controversy in order to increase readership. It has no interest in accurately telling what has happened. It obviously has no interest in keeping its own editorial feelings out of its news coverage. Not all newspapers are like that.
