CWNews & CatholicCulture Emails Inoperable 11/7 - 11/13

By Dr. Jeff Mirus ( bio - articles - email ) | Nov 12, 2009

LATEST REPORT:

As of 10:00 am Saturday November 14th, CatholicCulture-based email seems to be operational again. Affected services included Catholic World News email dispatches, biweekly Insights messages from Jeff Mirus, and messages from users to our editors posted with our Contact form: These were inoperable from Saturday, November 7th through Friday, November 13th. We are currently testing the system and progressively releasing old mail that was undeliverable during this period.

FULL STORY:

The web hosting company which hosts CatholicCulture.org performed maintenance which broke our email system around midnight on November 6th. This means that between Saturday, November 7th and Saturday, November 14th no emails controlled by the CatholicCulture.org website have gone out. The affected services included:

  • The daily email containing the news headlines from Catholic World News (Phil Lawler)
  • The biweekly Insights messages highlighting new material on the site (Jeff Mirus)
  • Administrative emails to users regarding our plans, programs and prospects
  • User emails sent to our editors by means of the CatholicCulture.org Contact form

We regard this as an extremely serious problem and have kept in nearly hourly contact with our hosting company until mail started flowing again around midnight on Friday, November 13th.

We do not think any messages have been lost. They were transfered to "failed mail" folders when they could not be delivered, and the technical staff is processing them out in batches, so as to check the system without overloading it, now that repairs appear to have been successful.

We’re sorry for this “outage”, and we appreciate your patience.

Jeffrey Mirus holds a Ph.D. in intellectual history from Princeton University. A co-founder of Christendom College, he also pioneered Catholic Internet services. He is the founder of Trinity Communications and CatholicCulture.org. See full bio.
